We had our second meeting of the Bronx-Lehman College NSA Chapter on July 24th.  There were eight people in attendance.  We opened by introducing ourselves and talked about the NSA conference in Chicago.  Those who attended said how energizing and uplifting it was to be in an environment of acceptance and shared experiences related to stuttering.  We talked about an incident reported in the news recently of a barista at Starbucks who made fun of one of the customers who stuttered. Some of us who watched the July 20th show “What Would You Do?”,  identified ourselves in the role that Marc played, and also recognized the great job that Marc did acting!  We shared experiences of people making fun of us or imitating us when we stuttered and how we reacted. Some examples were chose to ignore them, got angry, walked away, or ignored the listener and continued speaking.  We also discussed how we manage the challenge of meeting someone new or speaking on the phone and having to reveal ourselves as people who stutter.  Several members shared that they’ve found advertising to be particularly effective to let people know ahead of time that they are people who stutter.  Overall we agreed that having the opportunity to talk about our experiences in chapter meetings provides valuable support.
