We had 13 people at our sleepy August meeting in Brooklyn, with four first timers (welcome Colin, Terry and Tom!). Adjay kicked off the meeting by asking a question that has probably crossed all of our minds…”When I spend two hours a day practicing physical techniques, my speech is easier. But how do I balance working to stutter less with accepting my stutter (and getting enough sleep).” This question can be a polarizing one…After much discussion and commiseration, we ended with the idea that we can find a balance between the two if we wish to, and can make our own rules based on our needs, rather than strictly complying with the ones taught to us.
Then we (finally) wrote letters to therapists past, present or imaginary. The exercise was a nice way to collect our thoughts about therapy that has hurt or helped us, but will also be submitted to a book being complied for speech therapy graduate students. If you weren’t at the meeting but are interested in writing a letter for this project, contact Val (valterranova@gmail.com).
ALSO, the NYC NSA chapters are planning a day hike excursion upstate next weekend! If you want to come, RSVP here. It will be moderate hike upstate with a picnic in the middle. We are planning a big carpool, so if you have a car and can drive, shoot me an email.
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer! (buzzkill)
