Last night, the Dallas Chapter of the National Stuttering Association held it’s November meeting and here’s a quick recap of what happened.

We had a good group with some new faces (welcome to the group Raj!), and some returning members (Mark, after many years!). Welcome all! Happy to have you.

We started with introductions and our question of the day was “What fictional place would you want to visit?”. Sivan set the tone with Narnia, and we quickly moved to Atlantis, Therabithia and Gotham. Lee wanted to visit Shangri-La while Matt wanted to visit “a galaxy far-far away”. Brandon wanted to visit Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and Mark wanted to play a game in the “Field of dreams”… but the fictional place that got the most laughs was “a place where the Cowboys win another championship”, courtesy of Marcus Peters. Ouch… Moving on!

Quick announcements for the month:

– Brett Cunningham, our resident hunter-gatherer was our Spotlight of the Month! Congratulations!
– Our first fundraiser this month was a success! We ate, we drank, we raised over $550 for the NSA. Cheers!
– Our Holiday party is coming up. Keep an eye on your inbox for an announcement in a few days– it’s our last Chat and Chew of the year!
– Our one-day workshop has a date: January 27th, 2018. If you want to present a workshop, email us! We are actively looking for 1-2 more presenters.

And with that, we moved to our theme of the night: “Time to say Thanks”. With Thanksgiving just a few days ago, we decided that it would be a good idea to dedicate our meeting to thinking and thanking the people that have made a difference in our life over the past year.

“Stuttering” and “thankful” are two ideas that at first seem like an odd pairing. While stuttering can present many challenges and hardships, it’s just part of the story, as there are several unintended positive consequences that come with having a stutter. From learning how to be a good listener, to developing other talents “to compensate”, and finding friendship and support from people who stutter from all over the world, stuttering can be a blessing in disguise for some of us, so we took some time to reflect on those things. Being part of the Dallas chapter has been a blessing for many of us, and in the spirit of sharing that love with other people, we decided to write “Thank You” letters to those special people in our lives, call it a “Love Bomb from the Dallas NSA”, so to speak.

Look!

Those postcards were mailed out today to our families and friends. All signed, sealed, and delivered by us!

We are thankful to be part of this group and from all the love and support we get from it.

Thank you everybody!
