This month’s Spotlight of the Month honors Kate Cosway!

Katryn “Kate” Cosway is a 29 year old scientist from Ottawa, the capital of Canada. She was born five months prematurely and weighed just over 1 pound, but showing some resilience and miraculously surviving the odds, she made it. The doctors expected some developmental challenges and physical handicaps, and one condition she developed was a moderate stutter. At the onset, her parents put her into speech therapy and she continued going for another 10 years. Kate was outgoing as a child but became socially withdrawn in high school when others began to tease about her stuttering.

Kate went to school in Canada and obtained a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and was recently certified as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Even though she found the interview process for post-graduate jobs challenging, perseverance won and she is now employed as a scientist at a large healthcare laboratory. After moving to Texas, Kate wanted to find a speech based self-help group in her new town where she could practice fluency skills and meet fellow stutterers. She has only been with the Dallas NSA for six months but she enjoys the social environment and the changing topics each monthly meeting of the Dallas chapter. She also has expanded her boundaries volunteering to participate on some of the panels the Dallas chapter has had in the past few months. We are lucky to have her!

Next time you see Kate ask how many scientists it takes to change a light bulb!
