We had a great meeting with a mom and her 10 year old daughter (both of whom had attended the Summer Support Group). Most of the session revolved around brainstorming the daughter’s fantastic idea to advocate for people who stutter and people who are hard of hearing. She wants to put signs up at fast food drive-thrus to give people the option to speak with a person face-to-face at the window when ordering (see photos below), so they won’t feel as rushed.

She was excited to speak to the managers about this idea and thought that the flyer they made this summer (in the post below this) would help the employees be patient listeners.  Impressively, the daughter also ran for student council and had to give a speech in front of her classmates. In the speech, she talked about being a person who stutters and how she and the Stutter Stoppers made the flyer about stuttering — way to put it out there!

Mom also mentioned that she has noticed a change in her daughter’s overall confidence and self-advocacy since meeting other kids who stutter this summer. She isn’t afraid to tell people that she stutters, it’s important not to interrupt, and let her finish what she wants to say.

Finally, we made a list of people at school who would benefit from a presentation about stuttering and what fun non-speech-related things are planned for the rest of fall.

Wonderful ideas which we’ll look forward to making happen with the help of other group members! See you on October 9th at 4:15 for next school-age/parent group!
