This has month an exciting week for our chapter, with 3 back-to-back-to-back events. If you were part of them thank you so much for joining us, and if you couldn’t be part of them, here’s a brief recap for you!

Chat n’ Chew: Cheesy EditionLast Sunday the Dallas chapter of the NSA got together to do some serious chatting and chewing for it’s first Chat n’ Chew of the year!We met at the Dallas Grilled Cheese Company, and between talks about travels, kids, ghost peppers, and Russ’ workouts we had a wonderful time while munching on some of the most delicious grilled cheese sandwiches we have ever seen.

January Meeting: New Year, New Me?

Our first meeting of the year was attended by 14 people, including 3 new visitors (welcome Lucio, Melvin and Reshon!), and it was all about resolutions, goals and how to start the year with the right foot.

To break the ice we started with introductions and our question of the month was: What is something you want to accomplish this year?

Some of the responses included spending more time with family, procrastinate less, finish projects, survive grad school, read 10 books, facing the mirror with a smile, be less anxious when speaking, and liking Russ more.

Resolutions take effort, dedication, and all the help we can get! So in order to maximize our chances of success, we went through some research-backed tips that included:Write your goal down. Research shows that the simple act of writing down your goal –clearly and as specific as possible–increases your chances of success according to many researchers, as outlined in this Forbes article.Break your goal into small steps. Rome wasn’t build in one day, and you are not going to finish that magnificent project in one sitting. The best way to achieve big things is to break them into small, easily defined steps.Share it with the world. The power of peer pressure is undeniable. For some reason we are totally OK with letting ourselves down, but we go the extra mile to try to not let down our friends, family and significant others. It’s because of this that sharing your goals with your inner circle is one of the best ways to increase your chance of success, and who knows, you might even inspire somebody else in the process!
The conversation was very animated. and hopefully everybody got that little motivation push to achieve our goals this year.

And talking about big goals for the year, Greg, Melvin and Reshon shared with us their plan to film a movie starring a person who stutter! Their goal is to showcase the Dallas chapter, have a person who stutters play the leading role (which rarely happens), and share with the world the amazing NSA community. While some of the details are still on the planning stage, Greg and Melvin are currently working on the script and we will have more details in the following months. Don’t miss our next month’s meeting to find out more about this great project!

At the end of the meeting, between the excitement and the rush to get out of the building on time, we forgot to take a group photo  … so here’s an artist rendition of our meeting:

And finally…

Stuttering Panel at TWU Denton

Once again the Dallas chapter was invited to TWU Denton to share our experiences with stuttering with Speech Language Pathology grad students, and it was a blast.

Professor Sneha V. Bharadwaj, who teaches the Stuttering course this semester, invited us to talk to her class about a variety of topics that included growing up with a stutter, therapy experiences, relationships, advice for future SLPs and more!

These panels have become a staple of our chapter and every year we reach more and more students. We have already being contacted by UTD to host a panel in March, and TWU in Ft. Worth in April, so if you missed this one, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities throughout the year, and we hope to see you there!
Stutter on!
