Tonight we have some very interesting discussions at our meeting. The meeting itself consisted of 3 persons who stutter, 2 of which are SLP students, and 3 SLP students who do not stutter. Each member introduced themselves and said one positive and one negative thing that has occurred in their life recently. One person who stutters shared that he has noticed more pauses in his speech but that overall he is proud of the way he has demonstrated control over his speech. Another person who stutters told how he notices that he is more disfluent when giving speech therapy. The other members of the group encouraged him that it is okay to stutter as a clinician so long as he is a good model for the client. There was a debate about whether or not clinicians should give the client the option to go out into real world situations during therapy or not. Both sides of the argument were presented and a deeper understanding of the client/clinician relationship was established. Everyone left the meeting with new knowledge about stuttering, themselves, and how to better themselves in the coming weeks.
