At tonight’s meeting we had the pleasure of welcoming a reporter and photographer from our local newspaper. As our 5k race is quickly approaching, there will be a story run in theĀ Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre, PA about our support group and to promote the race. At tonight’s meeting we had 8 people, 4 people who stutter, 3 SLP students, and one practicing SLP. After a brief round of introductions many topics were discussed including how stuttering is perceived in the professional world and what the best way to self-advocate about your stuttering is. Those who do not stutter explained that they would rather have a person who stutters tell them that they stutter before beginning a conversation. While some person’s who stutter agreed with this, some argued that a person should not have to explain that they stutter to other people. Tonight’s meeting sparked interesting debates and left us all with a renewed sense of hope for the weeks ahead.
